Research Interests
Aquatic earthworms, aquatic invertebrate biodiversity, aquatic invertebrate taxonomy, aquatic oligochaetes, biogeography, salinity, species distributions, wetland conservation, wetland ecology, wetland fauna

Profile

I work in the Biogeography Program of Science Division and I am currently managing the aquatic fauna component of the Pilbara Biological Survey. This project, which is being undertaken over a 4 year period (2003-2007), is part of an assessment of biogeographic patterns (patterns in the distribution of biodiversity) in the Pilbara. It will make a major contribution to providing a scientific basis for future environmental management. Examples of the uses to which this information will be put include planning for a comprehensive, adequate and representative system of conservation reserves and enabling better assessment of the environmental impacts of development proposals.

I also undertake research into the systematics of aquatic oligochaetes (earthworms) of the Australasian region, concentrating at present on species from surface water and groundwater of the Pilbara and elsewhere in Western Australia. I have recently contributed to an Internet database of Australian oligochaete diversity.

Other duties include providing advice on wetlands and wetland fauna to other sections of the department and to other people and groups as required.

Expertise

My research has focused on various aspects of wetlands, primarily:

  • control of nuisance aquatic insects
  • systematics of aquatic oligochaetes
  • aquatic invertebrate survey
  • biogeographic patterning of wetland fauna
  • wetland ecology

Current Science Projects
