Employment and Research Experience

September 1997 - present

Manager, Biodiversity Conservation Group in the Science Division. Responsible for the management of nature conservation research projects within CALM. Currently this Group operates with 70 staff and a budget of $ 4 million. I am currently on the recovery teams of five threatened mammals, Chair of the Chuditch recovery team, Chair of CALM’s animal ethics committee, and secretary of the IUCN Australasian Marsupials and Monotremes Specialist Group.

June 1996 - September 1997

Acting as Head, Bioconservation Group, Science and Information Division, CALM. Responsible for the management of 56 staff, including scientists, technical officers, and administrative personnel.

June 1993 - June 1996

Following the restructuring of the former Research Division of CALM to become the Science and Information Division, I was appointed as the Manager, Species Conservation section, within the Bio-conservation Group.

In 1994 I was CALM’s representative on Department of Local Government advisory committees to review the States’ Animal Welfare Legislation and proposals for a Cat Act.

November 1989-June 1993

At the CALM Wildlife Research Centre, Woodvale as a Senior Research Scientist working on conservation programs for threatened mammals in the Fauna Program, then Species Conservation Section. During this time I acted as Principal Research Scientist managing the Research Divisions budget and Fauna Conservation Program Leader for periods of up to three months.

In 1992 I supervised the writing of recovery plans for the Chuditch and Shark Bay Mouse and then prepared successful applications to the Australian Nature Conservation Agency for funding to implement these programs. During this period I continued with cooperative research with the Zoology Department, UWA, through the commencement of an ecophysiological study on threatened mammals on Barrow Island. I also developed and implemented a program to eradicate the introduced Black Rat in the presence of several species of non target threatened mammal species on Barrow Island. Co-supervised an Honours project (Zoology UWA) on factors influencing the activity of the House Mouse.

July 1988-November 1989

Transferred to Wildlife Research Centre, Woodvale, as a Research Scientist to work in Fauna Conservation and Biogeography programs.

March 1985-July 1988

Following the incorporation of the Wildlife Branch of the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife into the Department of Conservation and Land Management, I become a Research Scientist involved in research and management of island nature reserves off the north-west coast of WA. For part of this time I was seconded to the Pilbara region as a Parks and Reserves Officer to undertake management operations on island nature reserves.

During this period I completed the management plan for the Dampier Archipelago nature reserves and commenced a research program into the distribution and breeding biology of marine turtles in northwest WA waters.

October 1982-March 1985

Employed as a Reserve Management Officer based in Karratha, by the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife to prepare management plans for island nature reserves, particularly the Dampier Archipelago. Successfully implemented a goat eradication program on Bernier Island and commenced Black Rat eradication program on several island nature reserves off the north west coast.

Cooperative research on the ecophysiology of arid island mammals commenced with the Zoology Department, University of WA, during this period. I also supervised an Honours project on the biogeography of reptile species in the Dampier Archipelago at this time.

September 1981-September 1982

Employed as a Biologist (Science 2) by the Department of Aviation, Canberra to examine the means of reducing bird hazards to aircraft, particularly in the vicinity of aerodromes. This involved making recommendations to ground staff on environmental management of aerodromes making them less attractive to birds.

February-August 1981

Employed by the Zoology Department, University of WA to assist in the Departmental animal years and to temporarily manage the Harry Waring Reserve at Jandakot.

March 1980-January 1981

Employed as a Research Assistant to Professor Don Bradshaw by the Zoology Department, University of WA. This involved the efficient management of his physiology and radio-isotope laboratories and running laboratory sessions in endocrinology.

1976-1981

While completing an MSc thesis at University of WA, I was employed to demonstrate Zoology to first, second and third year students. During this period, I also participated voluntarily with Department of Fisheries and Wildlife and WA Museum personnel on biological surveys on reserves in the Wheatbelt, Murchison and Goldfields regions of WA.

November-December 1976

Employed as a Graduate Assistant jointly by the Chicago Museum of Natural History and the WA Museum to assist in a mammal collecting program in the Kimberley Region of WA.

May-December 1975

Employed as a Graduate Assistant by the WA Museum, Department of Mammals and Survey, to undertake biological surveys of wheatbelt nature reserves. During the latter part of this period I was part of a team contracted by the Metropolitan Region Planning Authority to undertake a biological survey of the proposed Mussel Pool/Whitemans Farm complex at Caversham.

November-February 1970/71; 1971/2; 1973/4

Employed as a Technical Assistant by the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Wildlife Research Branch to assist in biological surveys of nature reserves.
