I am a plant ecologist working in the Biodiversity Conservation Group based at Woodvale. The main focus of my work has been plot based vegetation survey to inventory the flora and to gain an understanding of the conservation status of both plant species and plant communities. This type of work has been carried out on the Swan Coastal Plain, coastal communities along the south coast, the Goldfields ranges, the Carnarvon Basin and is currently being undertaken in the Wheatbelt.
Prior to 1989 I had worked as a plant ecologist in Tasmania for 7 years working on a variety of projects from the ecology of rainforest conifers on the west coast to the ecology of alpine heathlands of the Central Plateau.
I undertook a honours degree in botany at University of Queensland, and later a PhD at the University of Tasmania with a study on the ecology of four alpine cushion plant species. Other work in Tasmania included studies on community ecology and stand dynamics of Huon Pine, effects of cessation of grazing on alpine and subalpine grasslands, regeneration of swamp forests, study of macrofossil incorporation in an alpine lake, studies on snowpatch vegetation, the description of 20 000 year old cushion plant fossil, a study on the impact of trampling on alpine vegetation and identification of rainforests reserves.
In 1989 I joined the then Research Division, since that time the main focus of my work has been vegetation survey across the south west but has also included work on the monitoring the effects of the Dawesville Cut on the riparian vegetation of the Peel - Harvey, resurvey of 30 year old dieback plots, and an investigation of the dynamics of a lateritic shrubland.
