Research Interests
Community ecology, habitat mapping, marine biodiversity survey, marine ecology, marine fauna distributions, marine invertebrates, marine monitoring, shallow water benthic habitats, sponges

Profile

I am currently a Research Scientist (Marine Biodiversity Patterns) in the Marine Science Program of the Science Division. In this role, my work relates to:

  • biological resource assessment through habitat mapping, biodiversity surveys species inventory and marine fauna distributions;
  • and establishing long-term monitoring programs in WA's marine reserve system.

Expertise

My major area of expertise is marine invertebrate community ecology, particularly marine sponges where I have some taxonomic expertise. This expertise is utilised in the undertaking of marine biodiversity surveys in temperate, tropical and transitional areas of the State.

Another area of expertise in biodiversity mapping through mapping of marine benthic habitats using a suite of tools such as remote sensing and conceptual models. Over the last 5 years, I have been undertaking the development of a standardized shallow-water marine benthic habitat classification scheme.

Brief Curriculum Vitae

Academic Qualifications

Bachelor of Science (Biological Science) (Hons) Murdoch University 1996
Honours thesis: Ecology of sciaphilous sponges in the Perth region.
There were two components of this honours research, the ecology of the sponge community and the taxonomy of sponges.
The ecology investigated the spatial distribution of the sponge community, the influences of environmental parameters such as light, water motion and depth into the study cave. It incorporated the comparison of three currently used sampling/monitoring methods and the subsequent development of a photogrammetric sampling method. Community structure was investigated using both univariate and multivariate statistical analysis.
The taxonomy of sponges was a challenge, due to the many undescribed species in WA and their identification required specific histological techniques.
