David Coates is Program Leader for the Flora Conservation and Herbarium Program. He is responsible for coordinating and facilitating research in flora conservation and plant systematics including the recovery of rare and threatened species, taxonomic studies on the Western Australian flora and the amelioration of threatening processes such as Phytophthora dieback. He is also responsible for the activities of the Western Australian Herbarium and coordinates the Threatened Flora Seed Centre in relation to threatened flora recovery and flora translocation programs. He has expertise and interests in population biology, conservation genetics, population genetics, restoration biology and evolutionary patterns in native flora.
His studies have included conservation genetics, genetic systems in native plants, plant mating systems, genetic and ecological consequences of habitat fragmentation, evolutionary biology and systematics of triggerplants, conservation biology and recovery of rare and threatened flora, and management of remnant vegetation in fragmented landscapes.
