Profile

Alex Chapman is a Research Scientist within the Systematics Program of CALM’s Science Division. His long-term systematic research interests are in the vascular plant family Epacridaceae (now classified as subfamily Styphelioideae in the cosmopolitan Ericaceae). Alex is actively researching the circumscription and systematic relationships within the largest genus Leucopogon, as well as the southern genus Monotoca and its relationship to the endemic WA genus Oligarrhena. He is also the current editor of WA’s journal of systematic botany - Nuytsia.

Alex studied botany and biochemistry at the University of New England and subsequently at Sydney University whilst working at the National Herbarium of New South Wales on the systematics of Leucopogon (Epacridaceae) as part of the Flora of Australia project. On moving to Perth in 1987 he worked on the genus Acacia (Mimosaceae), focusing on the systematics of the Acacia bivenosa group and the preparation of detailed species descriptions, also for the Flora of Australia. During this time he was also completing a postgraduate diploma in Computer Science at Murdoch University.

In 1990 he was employed as a Research Scientist at the Western Australian Herbarium where his research focused on the development of corporate botanical information systems. In 1998 this work culminated in the launch of the FloraBase web site. Alex maintains a deep interest in bioinformatics as it applies to systematics - he is currently the Oceania representative of the Taxonomic Databases Working Group (TDWG) and a member of the Australian Herbarium Information Systems Committee (HISCOM), a working group of the Council of Heads of Australian Herbaria (CHAH). He is regularly invited to international meetings to speak on aspects of building a global plant systematics information system.

During 1998-99 he held the position as 42nd Australian Botanical Liaison Officer (ABLO) at the Herbarium, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew in London.

Brief Curriculum Vitae

Academic Qualifications

B.Sc. (New England) 1982
Botany/Biochemistry majors.

Masters Pr. (Sydney) 1985
The major project, fundamentally a review of the literature, was entitled ‘Taxonomic studies in the genus Monotoca R.Br. (Epacridaceae)’. This outline, supervised by Associate-Professor Roger Carolin, proposed research into the pollination biology of the group, as an adjunct to the examination of infra-generic relationships utilising isozyme analysis. The project was awarded a Distinction.

Postgrad Dipl. Computer Science (Murdoch) 1990
Covered the following subjects:
Data Structures, Computer Architecture, Data Bases, Systems Analysis, Systems Programming, Artificial Intelligence, and Computer Graphics.
The Special Project undertaken was entitled Systems analysis for the curation of new herbarium collections and was the basis for the total revamping of label generation processes for new specimens in the W.A. Herbarium.

May 1990 - present: Research Scientist, WA Herbarium, CALM, Perth

March 1988 - April 1990: Botanist, WA Herbarium, CALM, Perth

December 1983 - June 1987: Research Assistant, National Herbarium of NSW, Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney.

Member of Professional Societies

Other Professional Activities

Student Supervision

Co-supervision of Masters student from Edith Cowan University’s School of Natural Science, advisor to students from Curtin University and the University of Western Australia.
